16 inch Bandsaw

January 2019 I started my build of the 16 inch Bandsaw design by Matthias Wandel at Woodgears.ca.

I really enjoyed this build. The instructions and videos were all very clear - 99.9% of the things that went wrong during this project were my own fault - and I'm kind of sad it's now completed.
The 20 inch bandsaw is tempting, but unlike Matthias I really, really don't need another bandsaw :-)

Use the menu or the links below to navigate to the various parts of the project:

Modifications

A machine you build yourself is bound to be modified at some point - maybe even before you start building :-)

Here's a list of ideas from the Woodgears.ca reader built bandsaws page I found interesting; maybe some of these will make it into my build:

Page Mods
Rick and Larry Paulsen "Double-faced tempered hardboard for the places where you call for 1/4" ply. Looks nice, and it sheds sawdust really well, which is great for a dust enclosure.
We also added an industrial sewing machine lamp for spot illumination.
We used a cradle [note: tenon] jig and a key to register and cut the mitered slots for the splines on the corners of the top wheel mount frame."
Gordon Millar Sanding block [note: use it upside down as well to sand both pieces]
Bottom cover closure clip
Rick McConnell "I hinged the upper cover as you did with your 14" saw. I used a magnet to hold it closed."
Michael Mules "I switched to using a rasp and file instead to shape the wheel - possibly slower, but far, far, far safer and more controllable" [note: than using wood chisels].
Alois Schmidt "The recess for the table insert is cut with two pieces of plywood as a guide."

And from some other sources:

Page Mods
Marius Hornberger Another way of making the crown on the wheels, to prevent dust from collection under the tire.

Some of the English jargon was new to me, so this is my cheat sheet.

Shopping

My shopping list. I've only listed the things I didn't already have laying around (like screws, wood glue, plywood, some hardwood etc.), and I ordered some small things for other projects, so it's not 100% accurate. But it should give you an idea how much it all costs - and where to get some of the stuff if you live around here.

Inch fractions

The design is in millimeters for the most part, but some things like bolts, nuts and threaded rods are in inches.
If, like me, you're not familiar with them, inch fractions are quite unreadable... So I made a table to (hopefully) reduce the number of errors I will make.
The mm + x" columns are included to make looking up lengths like 2 3/8" a bit easier.
